AI & BIM for Automated Site Monitoring and Advanced Reporting
Overview
We supported a leading construction company in developing a portfolio of Industrial Research and Experimental Development (R&D) initiatives aimed at applying innovative and disruptive technologies to enhance and optimize execution processes and organizational models, with a strong focus on sustainability and safety.
Background
The client is a major EPC player in the large-scale infrastructure and complex construction sector, engaged in delivering strategic projects at both national and international levels. The company is recognized for its ability to manage highly complex technical and engineering operations.
Within a context marked by technological lag and the involvement of numerous stakeholders, the initiative was driven by the need to leverage internal capabilities and enhance the group’s level of innovation and competitiveness.
As part of a broader program structured around nine strategic areas, the project involved the development of solutions for the automated monitoring of construction progress through IoT sensors and Artificial Intelligence techniques. It also included the implementation of a virtual control room for remote monitoring of construction activities and advanced reporting, integrating multiple technological components such as GIS environments, BIM models, augmented and virtual reality, and predictive models.
Challenge
Building on previously conducted experimental initiatives, the project aimed to develop technological solutions for an integrated and automated system to capture operational data from construction sites. The objective was to improve the timeliness and accuracy of information supporting operational roles, enable remote monitoring and predictive risk management, and ensure greater availability and sharing of work progress data across the organization.
The key challenge was to integrate existing ways of working with high-potential disruptive technologies within a unified environment based on dashboards and BIM/IOT/GIS/AR/VR/AI technologies. This environment needed to support decision-making, reduce error-prone manual activities, enable variance analysis and predictive simulations, and create immersive virtual spaces for navigating construction sites for communication purposes with both internal and external stakeholders.
Approach
The project was launched based on a shared methodological and technological vision, defined in collaboration with the involved business functions and developed through a progressive cycle of design, development, testing, and consolidation.
The framework included an in-depth analysis of current processes through interviews and on-site data collection, aimed at understanding technical execution practices and defining an application architecture capable of integrating site updates with corporate platform data and digital models used to monitor both physical and financial progress.
This led to the design of architectural solutions aligned with requirements for integrating various enterprise systems and management platforms, Digital Twin environments, and complex data structures.
A unified environment for construction site management was then defined, including advanced dashboards for KPI visualization, immersive navigation tools using AR, VR, and AI agents, and integrated technologies for querying Digital Twins. In parallel, IoT sensor components were identified to automate on-site data collection, with the goal of improving data quality, enabling more timely progress tracking, and supporting more informed decision-making.
Delivery
Results Achieved
The results achieved to date include the mapping of worksite monitoring processes and systems, the development of a multidimensional reporting data structure, and a scalable technological architecture for the innovative management of projects and the group’s commercial objectives, designed to be user-friendly and suitable for top management and project owners.
Additionally, technological solutions for the automated acquisition of on-site progress data and the necessary integrations to ensure end-to-end process coverage have been identified.
