Lean Portfolio Management: Strategic Prioritization and Agile Initiative Launch

Overview

Identifying innovation priorities, building strategic portfolios, and launching the first initiatives through Agile ways of working.

Background

The client needed a more effective approach to directing innovation investments by identifying the strategic streams that would drive future growth and translating them into actionable initiatives. Beyond defining strategic priorities, there was also a need to equip the organization with practical portfolio management and prioritization tools, supported by a training program that would ensure long-term adoption and sustainability.

Challenge

The challenge was to transform strategic intent into a clear, prioritized portfolio of initiatives within an organization still largely driven by traditional practices and limited collaboration between business and IT functions. Establishing shared prioritization criteria, practical governance mechanisms, and an adoption-focused enablement journey was essential to making the transformation successful.

Approach

The program began with a strategic workshop designed to identify and align the most relevant innovation streams with business objectives. Based on these outcomes, two strategic portfolios were created and supported by Lean Portfolio Management practices and tools to evaluate, prioritize, and monitor initiatives over time.

The highest-priority initiatives were then launched as three Agile pilot projects, allowing the organization to test new delivery approaches while generating early business value. In parallel, a global training program was delivered to strengthen internal capabilities in Lean Portfolio Management and Kanban practices.

Delivery

Results Achieved

Within six months, the client successfully established two strategic portfolios, selected and prioritized key innovation initiatives, and launched three pilot projects aligned with its new innovation strategy. The program increased transparency in investment decision-making, introduced structured prioritization mechanisms, and enhanced internal capabilities, creating a scalable and repeatable model for future innovation initiatives.
