FinOps Strategy for Cloud Cost Monitoring and Optimization
Overview
Implementing a full-scale FinOps strategy on Google Cloud to enhance cost governance and operational efficiency.
Background
The client, Europe’s largest consumer cooperative, was undergoing a large-scale cloud transformation. As infrastructure expanded, the lack of a centralized system made it difficult to control spending and attribute costs accurately. The organization required a robust FinOps framework to provide visibility and accountability, ensuring that cloud investments aligned with business objectives and sustainability goals.
Challenge
The challenge was to design a transparent system for tracking cloud costs and optimizing resources across a complex infrastructure, ensuring precise cost attribution and visibility without disrupting innovation or scalability efforts.
Approach
Datwave implemented an advanced FinOps framework leveraging Google Cloud technology. The team built custom Looker dashboards integrated with BigQuery for real-time billing data and developed a strategic labeling system to classify resources by function and ownership. The solution included cost optimization through Committed Use Discounts (CUDs) and the streamlining of underutilized resources to maximize the return on cloud investment.
Delivery
Results Achieved
Analysis time was reduced by 50% thanks to improved visibility. Precise monitoring and tagging led to a 24% reduction in structural costs. The organization reached an 82% CUD adoption rate, significantly improving its FinOps maturity. Additionally, environmental impact was minimized, with CO2 emissions reduced by over 24% through the increased use of serverless and managed services.
